A few months ago, on Open House Weekend, I rushed around many of the Churches in town. Since then, I’ve been meaning to get into some of the ones I missed. The easiest to manage, because it is open every day, is likely our best known- King Charles, the Martyr.
It is a really attractive space inside, older than any of the other churches in the main part of town and with some great understated windows which make up for the (for me) slightly OTT plastering on the ceiling.
All nearly enough to make me forget the name of the place- What made Charles 1, a man who always seemed to me to have been one of the worst meddlesome monarchs we have faced in history, a martyr?
